Trip description

De Montfort University is taking part in Expo 2020 Dubai from October 2021-March 2022 as a founding partner of the UK Pavilion. Expo 2020 Dubai is the latest in a series of worldwide events beginning with the first World Expo, the iconic Great Exhibition of 1853, held in the Crystal Palace in London. The last, held in Milan in 2015, was the largest tourist attraction in the world that year.

As part of this engagement with the Expo 2020, DMU Architecture students have the opportunity to travel to Dubai and participate in the event. Travelling in mid-January, the trip will align with a themed ‘breakthrough week’ which will promote a particular aspect of future innovation at the UK Pavilion, with the focus being on sustainability, opportunity and mobility.

191 nations are participating with numerous individual pavilions, events and attractions to inspire, initiate change and create a better future through science, technology and design. Students will have the opportunity to study from the Expo grounds and take inspiration from breakthrough ideas from other countries.

The experience is expected to inspire ideas for positive action into designing and making Architecture within the MA Architecture Part II Course for promoting sustainability in its many branches and international contextual response. Students are also able to experience culture not only in Dubai but 191 countries presented in their own individual Pavilions.

The World Expo has inspired many generations of Architects for its sheer imagination and daring ideas for design. While the internet does gives access for information for the 191 pavilions, no Google image search can capture the excitement of truly experiencing the form and space on being there. We look forward for students to apply for this lifetime opportunity.

Cultural activities

Whilst in Dubai, students will have some free time to explore its many sights and attractions. You will have the chance to visit Dubai’s Burj Khalifa (£30), the tallest building in the world with a staggering 160 floors and looms at 828 metres high. Burj Khalifa opened in January 2010 after six years of construction and is probably Dubai’s most iconic landmark and holds plenty of world records.

In addition, DMU will organise for all students to take part in a desert experience which will include dune bashing, camel riding, entertainment and a traditional meal.
