About

Trip description

Students on this DMU Global experience led by DMUworks Placements and Contour Fashion staff will visit Los Angeles for 5 days. It is open to Contour Fashion students who are taking part in a competition ran by SKIMS based in Los Angeles, USA. Successful students will subsequently have the chance to pitch their ideas to SKIMS at their head office in Los Angeles.

DMU has developed a new partnership with SKIMS, which will potentially offer employment and placement opportunities for DMU students and graduates. In this initial engagement, second and third year students will participate in a competition, with the winners being offered placements or potential graduate roles. By visiting the company in person, students will be able to visualise themselves living and working in Los Angeles.

The trip will involve at least 1 full day visiting SKIMS, to include networking, a tour and talks, as well as pitching design briefs. There will also be visits arranged to ideally two further companies in Los Angeles, relevant to Contour Fashion course, such as swimwear brands. This will provide students the chance to compare differences between mass production companies such as Skims and smaller boutique style swimwear companies.

The estimated total cost for flights, accommodation and transfers for this trip to Los Angeles is £1000. Students will be expected to pay the remaining amount after the £400 DMU Global bursary is deducted from the total.

Learning objectives

Participating in a DMU Global opportunity can help you develop a range of employability skills and competencies that enhance your studies. Through participation in this trip to Los Angeles we expect that:

  • Students will gain insight into the operations and working practice of a global fashion brand
  • Students will develop a greater understand of employment opportunities outside of the UK
  • Students will take inspiration from the art and culture to inform future design assignments
  • Students will learn about cultural differences between the USA and the UK

Before the trip to Los Angeles, students will attend an initial briefing about the competition that will be delivered by both academics and Skims staff. This will identify those that are genuinely going to get the most from the trip.

A further briefing prior to the trip to cover etiquette and questions to ask when in front of the companies to ensure that students perform at their best. This will also cover presentation practise.

Cultural activities

Whilst in Los Angeles, there will be opportunities for students to visit the Getty Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. There will also be a free visit to the iconic Santa Monica Pier, where students can explore the beach, amusements and shops.

For those interested, there will be time to walk in the footsteps of actors and actresses by traversing the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Rodeo Drive.
