About

The Center for Japanese Language Education at Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU) welcomes students from partner institutions (including DMU) to join the Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Study Program every summer.

This is a three-week program designed for those who wish to improve their communication skills in Japanese language while increasing their understanding of Japanese culture through a variety of activities. There are three different levels for Japanese language classes, Beginner, Elementary and Intermediate, offering an interactive approach through lessons with KGU students who will support international students in classes.

The program will not only focus on language studies. We offer a variety of cultural learning opportunities – in addition to the regular language classes, students will also be able to engage with Japanese culture through participation in Japanese Culture Study classes, traditional arts and other cultural activities including a fieldtrip to a historically rich place like Kyoto.

Practical information

Students that participate on this summer school will need to pay the programme fee of 165,000 Yen (£930) directly to KGU after being offered a place by DMU, and then by KGU. The programme fee includes: all classes and cultural activities; accommodation; bus from accommodation to KGU on orientation day and a bus transfer to Kansai airport on departure.

The fees do not include: airfare; daily commuting costs and travel insurance. DMU Global will provide all accepted students with an £800 bursary.

Programmes of study

There are three levels of Japanese study open to students: beginner, elementary and intermediate. Students can read more about the level of study and expected learning outcomes on the KGU website. Further details can also be found in the programme guide above.

Cultural Activities

KGU will organise a range of Japanese cultural activities and field trips as part of the summer programme. This will include Wadaiko (traditional Japanese drumming) and Yuzen dying. There will also be the chance to visit the historic city of Kyoto to see the peaceful gardens and explore temples and shrines which will give students a better understanding of Japanese aesthetics and culture.

COVID-19 information

Travel to Japan is permitted according to the travel rules for England as listed on UK Government website. Students are strongly recommended to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to travel as per the guidance on the FCDO webpage for Japan.

For arrivals who are triple-vaccinated, there is no longer a requirement to have a COVID-19 test before you fly. Valid certificates must be shown to prove vaccination with three doses of any of the COVID-19 vaccines on the Emergency Use List of the World Health Organization (WHO). Some airlines may require these documents to be shown before boarding as part of their internal rules.

All students that are offered a place on this DMU Global opportunity will receive further COVID-19 advice and guidance by email and in pre-departure briefing sessions. More details and COVID-19 Travel Information can be found here.
