About

Trip description

Do you want to uncover the true value of your experience, and its value to others? Do you want to transform the way you see yourself and your hard-earned achievements in life so far? Do you want to take quality time to join an adventure overseas in Dubai and work with our careers staff and DMU alumni to develop your ability to speak accurately on yourself with pride and confidence? Are you passionate about mentoring and its transformative power?

Here is an opportunity to do just that. Your careers team, led by Andy Morris, manager of Inside Edge Mentoring at DMU, has designed a DMU Global trip that comprises a range of sessions and workshops, based in the DMU Dubai campus where you can develop your ability to learn from mentors, who once studied at DMU and now live and work in Dubai. By understanding their career journey and learning from their self-belief and experience, this overseas trip will empower you to do the same and develop your ability to speak on your own experience, sharing your story as peer mentors, culminating in you developing the skills that you will need in order to stand out in interviews when you graduate.

A series of careers staff led sessions, experiential learning workshops, multi-dimensional mentoring activity and cultural visits to key locations in Dubai, mark this trip out as unique opportunity to make a positive change to your life.

N.B. Students will be provided with accommodation at the DMU Dubai campus. More information about the facilities can be found here.

Learning objectives

Participating in a DMU Global opportunity can help you develop a range of employability skills and competencies that enhance your studies. Through participation in this trip to Dubai we expect that:

  • Participants will develop a sound understanding of the value and power of mentoring, via taught sessions and in group mentoring experiences with Dubai based DMU alumni
  • Participants will be taught how to use the mentoring tools and techniques they have been taught and observed in others to then use themselves in sharing their ownlife story
  • Participants will be placed in the position of then pitching themselves and their journey, skills, strengths etc in interview-based settings to ready themselves for industry
  • Participants will experience all of the above in the new environmental setting of Dubai, immersing themselves into the local life and business culture to further test themselves in preparation for industry

Before the trip to Dubai, staff will deliver a number of preparation sessions to ensure a minimum standard of understanding of mentoring, build a group team culture with the students, explore wants and needs, hope and fears and brief them to ensure they are fully ready for the experience.

Post-trip, we will revisit the trip with students and assess the short-term impact and seek to learn from their experience before considering another trip based on our learning.

Cultural activities

Whilst in Dubai, students will have some free time to explore its many sights and attractions. You will have the chance in your free time to visit Dubai’s Burj Khalifa (£30), the tallest building in the world. In addition, students will get a better chance to learn about the culture and history of Dubai through optional visits to the desert (£35) and the Old Dubai area located on the Dubai creek. There will also be the option to attend a group meal one evening (£30).

Visa Information

Due to various external factors and an unprecedented demand for international travel, there are significant delays in visa processing, as well as very limited availability of application appointment slots for some countries and embassies.

We recommend that you take all appropriate steps to secure a visa as soon as practically possible, and to notify DMU Global if you face any issues. It is your responsibility to meet the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to. Failing to do so may mean that you’re liable for the costs incurred to the university (including repayment of the DMU Global bursary).
