About
Trip description
The purpose of this trip is to bring cultural and environmental awareness around the use of Responsible Technologies from a Global South perspective. The activities will give students an understanding how these technologies are deployed to manage plastic and environmental waste, whilst assessing how these technologies impact the ethical and social aspects of the Indian society.
The trip will be delivered in cooperation with an organisation called, Revue Ensemble, based in Delhi. Revue Ensemble have established links to NGOs specialising in environmental and sustainability projects in the heart of India’s capital, New Delhi. They will act as a guide and chaperone for visits for students on the trip.
This trip will bring insights into the ethics of responsible technologies in India and how waste is sustainably managed by local facilities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a waste collection program and engage with the local community. Furthermore, students will visit and network with up to 4 NGOs understanding their facility (including organised workshops), the technological process of how waste is managed in Delhi and have the opportunity to go out into the local community to understand issues of sustainability and ethical impacts from the use of such technologies. Potential NGOs (to be confirmed) that the group may visit include:
The estimated total cost for travel and accommodation for this trip to India is £1000. Students will be expected to pay the remaining amount after the £400 DMU Global bursary is deducted from the total.

This will provide students to gain networking opportunities with NGOs whilst enhancing skills in communication, team working and cultural awareness.
Learning objectives
The aim of this trip is that students will understand the concept of sustainability from diverse perspectives, ranging from creative arts and through NGO visits to help highlights the issues of the environment including global warming, plastic waste and recycling. We are hoping they will gain a broader understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the environment from a global south perspective. Students will have the potential to personally increase their confidence of working and networking with NGOs which can help enhance their communications and team working skills.
In summary, the following are some of the learning objectives envisaged for the students:
Develop a Multi-Disciplinary Understanding of Sustainability – students will explore sustainability through various lenses, including creative arts, to gain a comprehensive understanding of environmental issues such as global warming, plastic waste, and recycling.
Analyse Environmental Challenges through NGO Engagement – Through visits and interactions with NGOs, students will examine real-world environmental challenges, particularly those related to the Global South, and understand the practical approaches being implemented to address them.
Deepen Knowledge of the UN Sustainable Development Goals – Students will enhance their understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on how these goals are pursued in the context of the Global South.
Cultivate Networking Skills with NGOs – The trip will provide students with opportunities to build confidence in professional networking by engaging with NGO representatives, fostering connections that may support future career or academic endeavours.
Experience Sustainability from a Global South Perspective – By immersing themselves in the local context, students will gain first-hand insights into how sustainability is perceived and implemented in the Global South, broadening their global environmental awareness.
Cultural activities
During the trip to New Delhi there will be free time for students to take part in cultural activities according to their preferences. However to ensure the safety of students, evening activities will be organised by the trip lead leads. The planned visits include a trip to Chandni Chawk (Mughal Delhi, market, monuments and settlements), Delhi Haat (Urban open space for folk and traditional craft market), Khirkee-Hauz Rani Urban Village, and hub of migrants from across the world.
All evening activities will be led by the group guide and give an idea of the city’s history, inhabitants, and the complex dynamic of social life. Furthermore, there will be an ‘Indian school experience’, where students will visit and engage with students at Ambedkar University.
