Eligibility

All DMU students are eligible to participate in this opportunity. DMU Global will consider applicants’ academic performance as part of the selection process. There are a maximum of 5 places available. Students are recommended to check the eligibility criteria before applying.

About

Turku Åbo Summer School offers students Finnish world-class education in an innovative learning environment. Students can choose to participate on a range of summer courses that will take place in Finland in August 2023.

Turku Åbo Summer School offers Bachelor’s and Master’s-level courses from five Finnish Higher Education Institutions. The courses offered will be for 2 weeks and teaching will start on Monday 7 August 2023, with a student orientation day planned for Friday 4 August. Students will be expected to complete some online tasks prior to arrival in Turku.

  • Digital Media & Social Change
  • Financing & Financial Markets
  • Game Design
  • Health & Wellbeing from Finnish Nature
  • Practical Introduction to Social Sustainability

Practical information

Students that participate on this summer school will be able to choose from a range of accommodation options in Turku, with an expected cost of €500 (£430) for the duration of the summer school. Accommodation must be arranged independently by students, with advice about options provided. The tuition fees for the courses ranges are approximately €75 (£66).

In addition to the programme and accommodation costs, students will be required to pay for and arrange travel to Turku (approx. £200-250). This includes a return flight to Helsinki and a 2-hour onward train to Turku.

Students will receive £500 as a special DMU Global summer school bursary. Payment for the summer school will need to be made by students directly to the Turku Åbo Summer School via their online payment and application system. The application deadline is 15 April 2023. Further guidance will be given to accepted DMU students.


Cultural activities

Turku Åbo Summer School offers their Sustainable Social Programme, which allows students to explore the most beautiful archipelago in the world, visit a national park and experience Finnish Sauna, as well as getting to know the city of Turku and some sites nearby. During the Sustainable Social Programme students also get a chance to get to know their new course mates better and integrate into the Finnish way of life.

The optional programme has a separate €100 fee which allows students to participate in all activities. Accepted participants will receive an e-mail with information about paying the fee and the detailed activity schedule.

COVID-19 information

Travel to the Finland is permitted according to the travel rules for England as listed on UK Government website. Students are expected to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 vaccine prior to travel. Further guidance can be found on the FCDO webpage for the Finland.
