About

In cooperation with our partner, Pagoda Projects, DMU Global will be offering twenty online events throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. All events are employability focused and aim to give students an insight into topics related to the international working world.

This event will look at the principles and process of starting and establishing a business. Speakers will share tips and resources which can help when starting and growing a business. It’s a unique opportunity to uncover the speaker’s personal stories and ideas.

Agenda:

  • The process of starting and establishing a business
  • The startup ecosystem in Asia
  • Specific tips and resources which can help when starting and growing a business
  • Challenges and opportunities for entrepreneurs during the COVID-19 pandemic

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about what it is like starting and establishing a business in Asia.
  • Discuss challenges that entrepreneurs are facing and opportunities that current pandemic brought.

Speakers:

Harriet Sheffer – Founder & Creative Director at Studio Hu

Harriet is a design strategist that seeks to bridge the gap between strategy conceived and strategy executed. Originally from London, she has experience working in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing before settling in Chengdu where she runs Studio Hu 糊画 – a creative studio focused on branding and visual identity design.

Harriet is also a co-founder of Chengdu based new media agency Pixel Valley, which owns some of South-West China’s biggest international platforms; Chengdu-Expat, ChengduBeer, and Hey-Xian! She is passionate about new frontier start-up environments, community building, and is the Co-Founder and Program Director of the Chengdu Women in Business Network – which now has over 1000 active members in South West China. She is also a regular speaker on the Fem-Tech industry, and facilitates TechStars’ Start-up Weekend in Chengdu and Xi’an.

Joe Fry – Founder of KOMPAK Micro

Class of ’11 Manchester Metropolitan Business School & Intern China Alum. After graduating Joe moved to China where he worked in varied roles in Sourcing, Product Development, Marketing & Sales on projects for companies like Mars, Ted Baker, Wren Kitchens & Manchester United. Joe has been an entrepreneur twice, with his second venture, KOMPAK Micro currently headquartered in Hong Kong. KOMPAK builds space-saving furniture & appliances for micro apartments in the world’s biggest cities.
