University of Oulu – Finland

The University of Oulu is one of the largest universities in Finland and was founded in 1958. The university has around 13,000 students and 2,900 staff. The university is often ranked as one of the best universities in Finland and in the top-400 worldwide

Every year the the University of Oulu welcomes around 600 exchange students from all over the world, offering students high-quality teaching and excellent study programmes, all set in a unique Arctic location. Further details about studying on exchange can be found here.

Programmes of study

DMU’s exchange agreement with the University of Oulu allows students enrolled on the following programmes to study abroad:

  • Arts, Design & Humanities – English Literature and English Language programmes
  • Health & Life Sciences – Education Studies

Modules will be available in English and further information about the study options can be found here. Exchange students will be required to follow a full programme of study for the academic year based at the University of Oulu.


Travel & accommodation

  • Travel – the nearest major airport to University of Oulu is Oulu airport. It is recommended to take a direct bus (route number 8) to the city centre and Linnanmaa campus that leaves from right outside the airport terminal.  
  • Accommodation – Exchange students have several accommodation option, either through the local student housing foundation PSOAS or through private providers. For more information check out University of Oulu Housing webpage.

Visas & insurance

  • Visas – To take part in this exchange you are responsible for ensuring that you meet Finnish immigration requirements.
  • Insurance – All students are recommended to purchase travel insurance for the duration of their time in Europe to cover personal possessions and healthcare. UK and EU nationals can apply for a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) which is time-limited to the length of the exchange period.
