About
Calling all budding travel writers. This DMU Global trip aims to build your writing skills AND strengthen your portfolio to dazzle potential employers when you graduate.
Our destination is Prague, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Travel writing is a core offering of lifestyle journalism, offering practical guides to a city or country a reader is planning to visit, a helpful nudge towards a destination they might consider, or simply an armchair escape from the daily drudge.
Our trip gives you a chance to gain practical experience of a real-world travel writing assignment. Tutors and students will work together to shape a publishing schedule for the trip, with advance planning meetings before we leave and daily morning conferences while we’re there. Students will sharpen their story-finding and writing skills, with the finished feature published in the travel channel of the DMU Journalism department’s own news website. And we’ll encourage you to seek out the lesser-known joys of the city. Prague’s treasure trove of attractions are known and loved around the globe but students on this trip will learn to look beyond the mainstream to find stories that will capture and hold readers’ attention.
If you enjoy writing and reading travel pieces, or reviewing exhibitions or shows, and you fancy doing it all in arty, funky, bohemian Prague, then this is the trip for you!

Cultural Activities
Whilst in Prague, you will have free time to explore the city’s rich cultural heritage and fascinating historical landmarks. Suggested activities include visiting major sites such as the Prague Castle complex, home to St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, and the picturesque Golden Lane. Don’t miss the Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square, where you can watch the hourly procession of the Twelve Apostles, or take a leisurely stroll across the Charles Bridge, lined with statues and offering stunning views of the Vltava River and the city’s skyline.
For a taste of local life, wander through the Old Town’s cobblestone streets and stop at one of its cozy cafés or traditional Czech taverns. You might also explore the Jewish Quarter (Josefov) with its historic synagogues and cemetery, or take a walk up to Petrin Hill for panoramic views of the city.
Other options include enjoying a Vltava River cruise, visiting the National Museum or the Muchá Museum, or discovering the vibrant Lesser Town (Mala Strana) with its baroque architecture and charming courtyards. For a unique experience, unwind in a traditional beer spa, sample authentic Czech cuisine such as goulash and svíčková, or attend a classical music concert in one of Prague’s historic churches or concert halls.
If time allows, consider a short trip to nearby sights such as Vyšehrad Fortress, the John Lennon Wall, or even a day excursion to Kutná Hora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its bone church.
Visa information
Due to various external factors and an unprecedented demand for international travel, there are significant delays in visa processing, as well as very limited availability of application appointment slots for some countries and embassies.
We recommend that you take all appropriate steps to secure a visa as soon as practically possible, and to notify DMU Global if you face any issues. It is your responsibility to meet the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to. Failing to do so may mean that you’re liable for the costs incurred to the university (including repayment of the DMU Global bursary). Visit our visa information page to learn more.
