This page provides an overview of the key information included in the DMU Global Student Agreement and has been designed to help you understand what taking part in a DMU Global experience involves, and what is expected of you. Here’s what you will find on this page:
What does it mean to take part in a DMU Global opportunity?
DMU Global offers DMU students a unique chance to travel, learn and develop skills through subsidised and well supported international experiences. These opportunities are designed to help you gain confidence, broaden your horizons and strengthen your future prospects.
Places on DMU Global opportunities are limited and highly sought after. Not every student will have the chance to participate, so being offered a place is both an exciting opportunity and a significant responsibility.
By accepting a place, you are committing to engaging fully with the experience, preparing appropriately, and contributing positively to the group, our partner organisations and the communities you visit. In return, DMU Global is committed to supporting you before, during and after your experience to help you make the most of your opportunity.
What do we expect from you?
We ask all participants to approach their experience with professionalism, respect, curiosity and an open mind. Remember, you’ll be representing both yourself and DMU. To help ensure a positive and rewarding experience for everyone, you are expected to:
Adhere to university and in-country rules and regulations
- Follow the DMU Student Code of Conduct and university regulations.
- Follow the instructions of your Trip Leads, host organisation or partner institution.
- Follow local laws, customs and cultural expectations in the country you are visiting.
- Behave respectfully, responsibly and safely throughout your DMU Global opportunity.
Take part fully
- Respond promptly to requests for information from the DMU Global team, Trip Leads and where applicable, host organisations and partners.
- Attend and complete all mandatory pre-departure sessions and activities.
- Participate in the activities included in your DMU Global opportunity.
- Follow the agreed itinerary and any safety instructions provided by staff or partners.
Tell us about any support needs
Tell us as early as possible about any disability, health condition, medication requirements, pregnancy or other circumstances that may affect your participation. This helps us consider reasonable adjustments and any additional support you may need.
You must provide accurate health and medication information where requested for travel insurance. Failure to declare a pre-existing health condition may affect your insurance cover.
Please note: In exceptional circumstances, you may not be able to take part in the opportunity or some activities despite reasonable adjustments. These circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Get your travel documents ready
- Obtain any visas and travel documents you need. Any visa information provided by DMU is for information only.
- Meet immigration and entry requirements.
- Check that your travel documents (e.g. passport) are valid for travel.
- Read and comply with the requirements of the DMU travel insurance policy.
- Provide requested travel documents (where applicable) to the DMU Global team.
- Provide details of your own travel plans to the DMU Global team or Trip Lead where requested.
Understand your financial responsibilities
- Pay any required deposits or contributions by the deadlines provided. Your place will not be secured until all required payments have been made. You may lose your place if you don’t pay by the deadlines provided.
- Cover your own personal expenses during the opportunity
- Complete any required documentation to receive a DMU Global bursary (where applicable).
- Understand that withdrawing from an opportunity may result in costs needing to be repaid.
Raise concerns early
If you experience any issues before or during your opportunity, please let the DMU Global team know as soon as possible. Reporting concerns early gives us the best chance to provide support and help resolve problems.
What you need to know
Before taking part in a DMU Global opportunity, there are a few important things you should be aware of.
Your personal information
To help organise and support your participation, we may share information with other relevant staff at DMU, the university travel and insurance providers, and partners or organisations delivering the opportunity (where relevant). Any information shared will only be used for purposes of delivering or facilitating your DMU Global opportunity.
Communication with DMU Global
We can only communicate with you about your DMU Global opportunity. Without your written permission, the university cannot discuss your participation with parents, guardians or other third parties.
Connecting with other participants
Your name and DMU email address may be shared with other students participating in the same opportunity to help you connect before departure.
Your studies take priority
DMU Global opportunities are designed to complement your university experience, but your academic studies must always come first. You are responsible for ensuring that your participation does not conflict with classes, assessments or other academic commitments. Academic deferrals will not be granted for the purpose of participating in a DMU Global opportunity.
Changes to opportunities
While we aim to deliver opportunities as advertised, dates, itineraries or arrangements may occasionally need to change. If this happens, we will communicate any significant changes as soon as possible. If we make significant changes to your opportunity, you may have the right to withdraw and receive a refund in accordance with the Student Agreement.
Third-party providers
Some opportunities are delivered by external organisations. In these cases, you may need to agree to additional terms and conditions directly with the provider. If you can’t accept these, this may affect your ability to participate.
Photography and marketing
Photographs and videos may be taken during DMU Global activities and events. These may be used in promotional materials, social media, websites and other marketing content. If you do not want your image to be used, you can opt out by emailing dmuglobal@dmu.ac.uk.
You may also be asked to share information about your experience to help promote DMU Global and inspire future students.
Your student status
You must remain a registered DMU student to take part in a DMU Global opportunity. If you stop being a registered student or are suspended from the university, your place will be withdrawn. The university may also withdraw your place if you become a debtor to the university or following a university disciplinary process.
What can you expect from us?
We want you to feel informed, prepared and supported throughout your DMU Global opportunity.
We will:
- Provide you with information and support to help you prepare for your opportunity.
- Provide relevant health and safety information as part of your pre-departure preparation.
- Make sure you know who to contact if you have questions, concerns or problems during your opportunity.
- Maintain contact with relevant host organisations during your opportunity, where applicable.
- Support you with concerns, problems or complaints raised during your opportunity where reasonably possible.
Withdrawing your place
We understand that your circumstances may change. This section explains what happens if you need to withdraw from an opportunity.
If you need to withdraw
You can cancel your place within 14 days of accepting the Student Agreement by emailing dmuglobal@dmu.ac.uk. Alternatively, you may use a model cancellation form provided here, but you do not have to use this template.
If you withdraw after the 14-day cancellation period:
- Payments you have made will not normally be refunded. Refunds may be available in certain circumstances, including documented medical circumstances or certain changes to the opportunity by the university.
- If you have received a DMU Global bursary, you may be required to repay some or all of it.
- Academic timetable clashes are not a valid reason for a refund.
Expected behaviour
All participants are expected to behave respectfully, responsibly and safely throughout their DMU Global opportunity.
Removal from an opportunity
Behaviour that may result in removal from an opportunity includes:
- Leaving the group or agreed itinerary without permission.
- Bullying, harassment, discrimination or threatening behaviour.
- Criminal activity or breaches of local laws.
- Damage to property, theft, fraud or dishonest conduct.
- Excessive alcohol consumption, drug misuse or behaviour that negatively affects others.
- Ignoring safety requirements or instructions from staff or partners.
- Any conduct that could damage the reputation of DMU, DMU Global or partner organisations.
If a student is removed from an opportunity because of misconduct, they may still be responsible for any associated costs incurred by the university and may also be subject to further disciplinary action under university regulations and policies.
Feedback and complaints
If you are unhappy with any part of your DMU Global experience, or would like to share feedback with us, we encourage you to get in touch with us as early as possible so we can try to help resolve the issue.
If you would like to make a complaint, please follow the university’s student complaints process outlined here.
