About

This trip is designed to provide Computing and Fashion students with a high‑impact international learning experience that directly supports their academic development, employability, and long‑term career progression. Milan offers a unique destination where technology, creativity, and industry innovation intersect, giving students the opportunity to explore how digital transformation is reshaping one of the world’s most influential fashion and design capitals.

A core focus of the trip is the enhancement of interdisciplinary learning, enabling students from both subject areas to understand how their fields increasingly overlap in professional practice. Fashion students will gain insight into how emerging technologies influence design, production, and consumer engagement. Computing students will see how their technical expertise underpins innovation in areas such as digital fashion, e‑commerce platforms, AI‑driven retail, and immersive brand experiences. By engaging in joint activities students develop a broader perspective on how creative and technical disciplines collaborate in modern global industries. This cross‑disciplinary exposure strengthens their adaptability, problem‑solving skills, and awareness of new career pathways that blend computing and design.

The itinerary will include talks and visits with industry contacts or companies and the chance to engage with a Milan-based DMU Alumni who’s completed a placement year, as well as a potential academic visit to support students in building international networks, gaining insight into global career pathways, and understanding the skills required for competitive graduate and placement roles. Exposure to Milan’s academic landscape also helps students make informed decisions about postgraduate study.

Finally, interactive and creative careers sessions will help them strengthen their abilities further and support reflection and skills development in line with the DMU Graduate Attributes.

Learning objectives

The main objective of the trip is to widen the career aspirations of Fashion and Computing students by introducing an innovative sector where fashion and technology intertwine. They will see and experience different career options they could pursue with their degrees which might be alternatives to the more traditional paths most graduates take.

The trip also aims to expose students to innovation and new developments in the industry. This objective ties in with improving graduate outcomes, and activities on the trip will include careers workshops that support developing students’ graduate attributes and employability skills. Finally, students will grow their professional network and get the chance to enhance their networking and communication abilities by speaking to various industry contacts and/or DMU Alumni and learn about further study opportunities abroad by exposure to universities in Milan offering English language Master courses.
