About

As part of the DMU Global Cultural Horizons series, students will spend a week in Seoul, South Korea, taking part in a programme designed around cultural learning, exploration and exposure to real‑world experiences. Through an immersive mix of activities, workshops and hands‑on experiences, students will build the confidence and skills needed to navigate different ways of life, unfamiliar perspectives and new cultural settings.

Described as a city where tradition and innovation exist side by side, Seoul is one of Asia’s most dynamic and influential cultural capitals. Its rich heritage, cutting-edge technology, globally celebrated creative industries and distinctive urban character make it an ideal destination for students to explore the relationship between culture, design and everyday life.

While in South Korea, students will have opportunities to experience a diverse range of environments, from historic palaces and traditional neighbourhoods to contemporary architecture, and unique and lively districts. Through visits to cultural landmarks and partner universities, students will gain insight into how Seoul balances rapid modernisation with the preservation of cultural identity. Students will also have the chance to engage with local Korean students, sample Korean cuisine and learn more about the history and language of the country.

From guided tours, and creative workshops to cultural encounters and independent discovery, the programme will encourage curiosity, adaptability and critical reflection. Students will be challenged to consider different perspectives, broaden their understanding of global cultures. Above all, the experience offers an exciting opportunity to step beyond familiar surroundings while exploring one of the world’s most inspiring and forward-thinking urban environments.

What to expect?

Guided by members of the DMU Global team, students will take part in a varied programme combining workshops, hands‑on learning, peer interaction and structured reflection. Together, these activities are designed to help students better understand cultural differences, reflect on their own perspectives, and build confidence when engaging in unfamiliar international settings.

As part of this experience, students can expect to actively participate in:

  • A pre‑departure workshop at DMU, introducing key ideas around culture, communication and what it means to live, study and work across different cultural contexts.
  • A range of cultural activities in Seoul, including a Korean language taster class, Korean food experiences, historical and social visits (such as a city tour and the Gyeongbokgung Palace), as well as cultural excursions too, such as a visit to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
  • In‑country workshops, challenges and reflective activities, encouraging students to observe, question and make sense of cultural similarities and differences as they encounter them in real-time. Engagements with a number of our partner universities in Seoul, which will give the opportunity to meet local students and engage in cultural exchange at Sookmyung Women’s University, visit Dongguk University, and engage in workshops and lectures related to language, culture and history.
  • A group project, developed throughout the programme and culminating in a final presentation at the end of the trip, allowing students to reflect on and demonstrate what they have learned during their time in South Korea.
