The Exchange Students from Overseas Program (ESOP) is open to all disciplines and is designed for students particularly interested in Japanese cultural studies.
Specific modules of study are available to Business Management, Marketing, Accounting, and Finance students through the Global Business Programme (GBP).
Students in International Business, Business Management, Marketing, Economics, Fine Art, Media and Communication, Journalism, Film Studies, Politics and International Relations, English Language and Literature, History, Education Studies, and Psychology can explore the Global Interdisciplinary Studies (GIS) programme.

At Hosei University, exchange students are encouraged to actively engage in a variety of campus activities and events that foster cultural exchange and community involvement. The Global Education Center organizes regular events such as the Welcome Party and Farewell Party, providing opportunities to connect with fellow international and Japanese students.

Additionally, the HUBs (Hosei University Buddy System) offers a platform for exchange students to collaborate with local students, assisting with daily life and participating in various social events.

For those interested in media and public relations, the HOSEI Promotion Project allows students to work alongside Japanese peers to promote the university and Japan in English through social media, content creation, and event reporting.

These activities are designed to enhance the student experience, provide a deeper understanding of Japanese culture, and foster lasting international friendships.

Travel & accommodation

Travel – Hosei University’s campuses are located in central Tokyo, with the Ichigaya campus in Chiyoda-ku and the Koganei campus in western Tokyo. The city is well-connected by trains and buses, making commuting to campus easy. The nearest international airports are Narita International Airport (NRT) and Haneda Airport (HND). From either airport, students can reach central Tokyo by train or bus.

Visas & insurance

Visas – To take part in this exchange you are responsible for ensuring that you meet Japanese entry requirements.
Insurance – DMU insurance is not sufficient for studying on exchange in Japan. It is mandatory for exchange students to purchase National Health Insurance (Kokumin Kenko Hoken) after arrival, according to the Japanese Government Policy for foreigners who will stay over 90 days. ISEP provides an alternative route to studying in the USA, alongside DMU’s direct partner universities. While all students are welcome to apply, ISEP may be particularly appealing if:

You are especially keen to study in the United States and would like access to a wide range of universities through a single application.
You would value the additional support provided by ISEP, including arranged accommodation, meal plans, and visa sponsorship.
You are interested in studying at a wide range of US institutions, offering a broad range of locations and courses.

This makes ISEP a good option for students who want reassurance around accommodation and visa processes, and who are motivated to explore study opportunities across the United States.

What does the application process look like?

Applying for an ISEP placement is a two stage process:

Apply to DMU Global
- Applications for the 2026–27 academic year open on Monday 27 October 2025 and close on Monday 12 January 2026.
- Applications are submitted via DMU Global as advised here.
Apply to ISEP
- If your DMU Global application is successful, you will then submit an application directly to ISEP by Sunday 1 March 2026.
- At this stage, you can select up to 10 preferred universities, and ISEP will attempt to place you at one of your top four choices.

DMU Global and ISEP will run information sessions to guide you through the process and provide tailored support at each stage.

Fees and support

ISEP operates on a model where you pay DMU housing and meal costs. In return, you are provided with pre-arranged accommodation and a meal plan at your host university, making it broadly comparable to continuing your studies at DMU.

There are a number of fixed fees that will be payable to DMU/ISEP as part of your year abroad. For the 2025-26 academic year, these fees included:

ISEP Exchange Application Fee: $100 (approx. £76)
ISEP Exchange Placement Fee: $450 (approx. £345)
Accommodation: £6,095
Meal plan: £2,808

Please note: Fees are subject to change and will be updated for the 2026–27 academic year.

Carleton University – Ottawa, Canada

Carleton University is a public comprehensive university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The university is reputed for its strength in a variety of academic fields such as Humanities, International Business, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and many of the disciplines in its Faculty of Public Affairs. The university is also renowned for the strong performance of its men’s basketball team, which won seven consecutive Canadian national championships between 2006 and 2017.

California State University, Chico – Chico, California, USA

California State University (CSU), Chico was founded in 1887 and is the second oldest campus in the 23-campus California State University system. The University offers more than 100 undergraduate major and minor options and has almost 18,000 students. Chico is located north of Sacramento and is only a few hours away from Lake Tahoe, San Francisco and the Oregon border. A three-hour drive away from the mountains, the city or the beach.

Francis Marion University – Florence, South Carolina, USA

Francis Marion University (FMU) is a public liberal arts university located six miles east of Florence, South Carolina. The campus includes 100 acres of mixed pine-hardwood and bottomland forests accessed by a series of trails, and is located just an hour’s drive from Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand. Approximately 4,000 students are enrolled at FMU, and they welcome exchange students from 18 partner universities in 13 countries.

FMU competes inter-collegiately in the Peach Belt Athletic Conference in 12 varsity sports, including basketball, cross-country, volleyball and tennis, and the brand new Griffin Athletic Facility is home to baseball, softball and soccer teams. The campus also features a number of recreational facilities – including two swimming pools, a gym, volleyball and racquetball courts and spacious athletic fields – that are available for use by students.

Francis Marion’s 468-acre main campus is known for its beauty and serenity. The campus includes acres of mixed pine-hardwood and bottomland forests accessed by a series of trails.

In the past several decades Florence has become a major medical, financial and industrial centre. Situated at the intersection of two major interstates, Florence is near a number of exciting tourist destinations. Ninety minutes to the east is the Grand Strand and Myrtle Beach, one of the most popular vacation areas in the United States. About two hours south is Charleston, established in 1670 as a major colonial “port towne” and the site of the cannon shots that began the American Civil War. Directly west is Columbia, the capital of South Carolina and the largest city in the state.

Georgia College and State University – Milledgeville, Georgia, USA

Georgia College and State University (GCSU) is a public liberal arts university located in Milledgeville, a charming, traditional southern town less than a two-hour drive from Atlanta. Approximately 7,000 students are enrolled at GCSU.

Exchange students have full access to the Wellness and Recreation Center, and there is a large variety of activities available to help you keep active and healthy during your exchange.

Downtown Milledgeville is a great complement to the welcoming atmosphere of Georgia College. Milledgeville is a true college town, offering a great combination of restaurants, bars, shopping, cultural events, outdoor activities and more. Most importantly, Milledgeville is a safe and inviting place where GC students can relax and enjoy themselves. Serving as Georgia’s state capitol for 64 years, Milledgeville is located less than a two-hour drive from Atlanta, and an easy drive from all the other great cities in the Peach State – Athens, Macon, Columbus, and Savannah.

Grand Valley State University – Allendale, Michigan, USA

Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is a public liberal arts university in Allendale, Michigan which has a diverse student population of 24,000 representing over 70 different countries. It offers 94 undergraduate degree programmes over eight different colleges which are: Business, Community and Public Services, Education, Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Computing, Health Professions, Nursing and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Sustainability is a key principle for GVSU, and it has been ranked as 16th in the world for environment-friendly university management by GreenMetric World University Ranking.

There are lots of ways to get involved in student life while on exchange at GVSU. There are over 400 student organisations to choose from, focuses of which range from academic, cultural, media and special interests to performing arts, sports and more. The vibrant Campus Life Night, comparable to a society fair at DMU is an annual event, allowing students to learn more about these organisations. The Community Service Learning Center is a great way to participate in programmes that benefit the entire West Michigan Community. Initiatives beneficial particularly to exchange students include Fitt the Mitt and Bringing Together the World (BTW).

Grand Valley State University’s Recreation and Wellness offers not only Intramural and Unified sports but also fitness services including personal and group training, nutrition and even massage services! The wellness focuses on health and well-being, both physical and mental health are accounted for with many resources available to support this. Facilities include, 95,000 square feet of recreational space at the Recreation Center, a pool, both with free access for students and much more.

Travel – GVSU suggest that students fly to the Gerald R. Ford Grand Rapids International Airport (GRR) where pick-up is organised by the university on designated arrival dates. It is strongly suggested that you do not attempt to take a train or bus from the Chicago or Detroit airports.
Accommodation – you will need to apply to live in the Carleton University student halls of residence. For more information check out the GVSU Housing webpage. Although GVSU has various housing types available, on-campus apartments are what the university recommends for exchange students. Specifically, Laker Village is recommended as most international students live in this community and it is home to the International House. ERAM University School – Girona, Spain

Located in the new cultural factory Coma Cros de Salt, ERAM University School is a school attached to the University of Girona.

ERAM more specifically was founded in 1998 by The Joan Bosch Private Foundation, a non-profit organization, with the aim of creating new professional profiles in the field of audiovisual communication and offering a response to new emerging professions. It currently imparts three official degrees, Audiovisuals and Multimedia, Performing Arts and Audiovisual Communication and Media, each with a unique curriculum.

In the city of the four rivers, history and the mixture of modernity and antiquity converge in the old quarter. From the picturesque houses on the Onyar river and crowned by the impressive cathedral with the widest gothic nave in the world, you will walk through its narrow streets and find hidden treasures, like the Jewish quarter (the Call, one of the most important in Europe), the Carolingian wall or the Arab baths, as well as the outstanding works of the Noucentista period and modern art.

Whilst studying at ERAM University School, students can engage in a variety of activities offered through the University of Girona such as language classes, theatre workshops, the UdG choir and the Xoriguers human tower building group. There are many opportunities to get involved in public engagement and volunteering such as working with children in schools. The university has a dedicated sports centre offering classes such as Yoga, Krav Maga, Zumba and Taekwondo as well as winter sports activities such as snowboarding and skiing.

The charming city of Girona, which houses over 15,000 university students has a varied cultural offer throughout the year, combining leisure, gastronomic, business and cultural activities such as the Temporada Alta Theatre festival or the Black Music festival, and events such as Temps de flors, during which corners of the city are filled with spectacular floral arrangements. It also offers first-class music, good theatre programs and a wide range of museums (such as the Cinema Museum), art galleries and exhibition halls.

Travel – the nearest major airport to ERAM is Girona-Costa Brava airport, located 20 minutes by car from the city. A bus line covers the Airport to Girona city centre departing every half an hour. You can also fly to Barcelona ‘El Prat’ airport. There is a bus service from the airport to Girona that takes 90 minutes. Alternatively, you can also travel by train, changing at Sants station. Visas – To take part in this exchange you are responsible for ensuring that you meet Spanish immigration requirements.
Insurance – All students are recommended to purchase travel insurance for the duration of their time in Europe to cover personal possessions and healthcare. UK and EU nationals can apply for a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) which is time-limited to the length of the exchange period.

Seinan Gakuin University – Fukuoka, Japan

Seinan Gakuin University (SGU) is a private humanities-focused university with a long history of international exchange and cooperation. The international exchange program, now managed in the Center for International Education, is one of the oldest such programs in Japan. With a total graduate and undergraduate student population of about 8,500, SGU is consistently ranked as one of the leading privately-funded universities in Western Japan.

Fukuoka city, where Seinan Gakuin is located, is situated on the island of Kyushu, the southwestern most of Japan’s four major islands. It is a city built on commerce, with a population of about 1.6 million, and has developed as the cultural and commercial center of the island. The city enjoys a convenient geographic location with easy access to other Asian nations, only 540 kilometers from Seoul and 870 kilometers from Shanghai, versus 1,100 kilometers to Tokyo.

One of the key attractions of Fukuoka is the way it combines the convenience of the city with a rich natural environment. The public transport network is excellent, with rail, bus and subway services that make it easy to get around in the city. Lush natural surroundings – sea and mountains – are only about 30 minutes away from downtown, and the city is noted nationwide for its delicious foods.

Exchange students will be required to follow a full programme of study for the academic year based at Seinan Gakuin University.

All students on exchange at SGU study a combination of Japanese language courses and elective modules which are taught in English in relation to Japanese culture, history, tradition, business and society.

The Japanese language courses include Comprehensive Japanese, Writing and Reading which are offered at different levels. Students with no prior knowledge of Japanese language can start at beginners level.

The SGU student volunteer group, ‘Seinan Global Society (SGS)’, actively holds social events on campus to offer students opportunities to develop international awareness, learn about different cultures and widen their perspectives. Their events include sports activities, cultural events (Halloween, Christmas, cherry blossom viewing) and social gatherings (International Coffee Hour).

Moreover, 150 clubs are available for students to join. This includes academic and cultural clubs such as Japanese chess (Shogi), Rakugo, Shodo (Calligraphy), and more. Students can also enjoy traditional Japanese sports through the sports clubs such as Kendo, Shorinji-Kempo and Aikido. The coastal location also means students can participate in boating and yachting.

Travel – the nearest major airport to SGU is Fukuoka Airport, 20 minutes away using the subway.
Accommodation – Students can apply to live in the on-campus International Houses which may be shared or private. Off-campus housing is also available. Northern Kentucky University – Highland Heights, Kentucky, USA

Northern Kentucky University (NKU) is a growing metropolitan university of more than 14,000 students served by more than 2,000 faculty and staff on a thriving suburban campus of Highland Heights in Kentucky. It is just seven miles southeast of Cincinnati, Ohio and close to Newport, both vibrant cities where you can explore miles of nature trails and attend music, food and cultural festivals all year long.

The Northern Kentucky Norse are the athletic teams of Northern Kentucky University. They participate in the NCAA I which is the highest level of intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States.

NKU academic programs are organized into seven colleges including the Haile/US Bank College of Business, Chase College of Law and School of the Arts. They offer over 80 undergraduate majors including Business, Law, Humanities, Media, Theatre, Education and lots more. NKU has a 19:1 student to faculty ratio which means there is a close relationship between staff and students. The Mayerson Student Philanthropy Project integrates academics with experiential philanthropic work and there are many other Civic Engagement opportunities available to students.

The International Student Union (ISU) at NKU is the umbrella organization of all international organizations at NKU. All incoming students are automatically considered members of the ISU which is an important dynamic and welcoming presence on the NKU campus and is open to all. W.I.S.H (Welcoming International Students Home) encourages friendships between the NKU student body, the local community and international communities represented by students studying at NKU. This programme is designed to develop friendships by weekly English conversation groups, attending sporting events in the area (national and amateur), horseback riding, shopping, etc. It Is also an opportunity for cultural exchange.

The ISSS also prepare an orientation schedule for incoming students which runs a week before classes begin. This aims to acclimatise students onto campus and make them aware of resources available. It also allows exchange students to get to know each other, learn about US cultural values and practices, meet the ISSS staff and receive other vital information regarding the exchange period.

Student Affairs at NKU provides quality co-curricular programs and services that incoming students can take advantage of. It is home to over 200 student organisations ranging from disciplinary clubs such as the biology club to service organizations, advocacy groups, Greek organizations, sports clubs, faith-based organizations, leadership societies and more. There is also an exciting calendar of events on offer covering a range of areas throughout the year, such as the annual service.

Health and fitness activities are catered for by the Campus Recreation Center which has multiple facilities including 17,000 square feet of weight and fitness space, over 100 pieces of cardio equipment, Bouldering rock climbing wall, racquetball courts, an Aquatic Center, featuring an indoor pool, eight lane 25-yard lap swimming pool, dive well, warm water tub, and active shallow water area, and much more.

Kwansei Gakuin University – Nishinomiya, Japan

Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU) is an independent institution for higher education, offering Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in over 35 different disciplines to a student body of approximately 24,700. Founded in 1889, the university maintains academic standards that rank among the highest of all Japanese universities and colleges. KGU places a large emphasis on producing ‘global citizens’, and in 2014 was selected by the Japanese government as one of 37 out of a total of 800 universities nationwide to receive funding under the Top Global University Project.

KGU offers ‘The Contemporary Japan Program’ which is specially designed for incoming exchange students to Kwansei Gakuin University.

Exchange students are offered a choice between two study tracks that will define the main focus of their time at KGU, the “Japanese Language Track” and the “Modern Japan Track”. Exchange students are also able to select elective courses to learn more about “Contemporary Japan” from a variety of aspects such as language, culture, society, economy, and politics.

Please note that eligible DMU students from all Faculties can choose to study at KGU (subject to Programme Leader approval).

At KGU, A mandatory orientation of approximately one week will be held at the beginning of each semester, introducing new students to life in Japan and information on KGU. In addition, Acting as language partners for the JLT exchange student’s first semester, KGU student volunteers will assist exchange students in practicing Japanese conversation. Exchange students who are enrolled in the Japanese Language Track will have a Nihongo Partner.

On-campus there is also the GS Network is an official student group endorsed by CIEC, supporting exchange students during their stay in Japan. They also plan cultural exchange activities for both exchange students and KGU students over the course of the year.

More broadly a range of extra-curricular opportunities are offered and Exchange students are encouraged to join KGU student groups to enrich their study experience in Japan. There are over 150 cultural and sports clubs and “circles” on campus. A circle is a group of students who share a common interest in an activity and gather periodically to explore this interest together. Clubs tend to require more commitment than circles do, and are often the equivalent to university level team sports. Exchange students should be aware that they may not be able to join certain clubs/circles due to the length of their exchange.

Accommodation – Students can apply to live in the on-campus dorm which may be shared or private. Availability is not guaranteed for students applying in 22-23. There is also the option to apply for a homestay with a Japanese family. Dorm rooms cost between £270-380 per month (excluding meals and utilities).

The College at Brockport, SUNY – Brockport, USA

The College at Brockport, State University of New York (SUNY Brockport) is a liberal arts college in Brockport, Monroe County, New York, United States, near Rochester. A constituent college of the State University of New York, it has been ranked by U.S. News in the first tier of Master’s-granting colleges in the Northeast region, and by Kiplinger’s among the top 100 “Best Value” public colleges and universities in the United States.

The College offers 42 undergraduate majors, and boasts 23 NCAA intercollegiate athletic teams, arts and cultural events, and more than 60 clubs and organizations. The 464-acre campus includes recent multimillion-dollar renovations to Smith-Lennon Science Center, Hartwell Hall, Seymour College Union and Harrison Dining Hall, a newly opened 208-bed townhome facility, and a $44-million Special Events Recreation Center opened in 2012. Just over 8,000 students study at the institution.

The College at Brockport have over 100 clubs and organizations that fit almost any interest. They have different events taking place for students to attend to such as Glow Yoga, Shazam Music Competition, Wing Fest and so on.

You can stay or get fit at their award-winning Fitness Center. Take a group fitness class, work with a trainer, get instruction in first aid, or learn how to ice skate.
