About

Trip description

This opportunity will deepen student’s understanding of sustainability and the practical applications of sustainable practices. By visiting and engaging with local organisations who focus on sustainability, students will gain insights into how volunteering initiatives in Malaysia are addressing climate change and other environmental issues.

Students will visit the Free Tree Society, a non-profit environmental agency, to learn about conservation efforts, climate change solutions, and sustainable practices like rainwater harvesting and waste management. They will also participate in a tree-planting workshop and learn about nursery management. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to explore the KL ECO Forest Park and the National Elephant Sanctuary, both managed by the Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks, to gain a broader understanding of sustainability initiatives in Malaysia. Through these experiences, students will develop a deeper appreciation for global sustainability challenges and be inspired to contribute to positive environmental impact.

During the trip, students will be hosted by DMU’s partner Asia Pacific University (APU), providing the opportunity to be immersed in a Malaysian higher education setting – touring the campus, experiencing the different teaching and learning environment, and taking part in workshops and lectures. There will be collaboration with APU’s students, fostering cultural exchange and global perspectives.

Why take part?

Learn about climate change and sustainability; immerse yourself in a vibrant new culture; collaborate with students from around the world; and make lifelong friends and unforgettable memories. This is your chance to gain valuable skills, explore a new country, and make a difference.

Learning Objectives

Participating in a DMU Global opportunity can help you develop knowledge, skills, and competencies that enhance your employability. The objectives of this trip to Malaysia are to:

  • Gain an insight into the Climate emergency and understanding environmental solutions
  • Understand the role and impact of NGOs and governmental organisations towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Develop an understanding of Malaysian culture
  • Build relationships and meaningful connections with students in another country
  • Understand the five ways of wellbeing and how outdoor immersion, connecting with people and giving back plays a role in this

Before this trip there will be a number for preparatory activities, including carbon literacy training, pre-departure planning sessions and virtual engagements with APU students.

Cultural Activities

As part of the itinerary, students will learn about Malaysian culture such as local customs, dress and games through sessions with teaching staff from Asia Pacific University and a hands-on exchange workshop with local students. With both De Montfort University and Asia Pacific University having a diverse student population, this promises to be a rich session spanning not just British and Malaysian culture but that of other countries too.

Students will have free time to discover Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. Students can immerse themselves into the rich history of Malaysia at the National Museum, exploring artifacts from prehistoric times to the present day or discover the intricate beauty of Islamic art and architecture at the Islamic Arts Museum. Other cultural experiences include visiting the Art House Gallery of Ethnic Arts or the Orang Asli Craft Museum.

To explore the cultural diversity, students can explore bustling markets like Central Market, Little India, and Chinatown and savour delicious street food at night markets such as Petaling Street and Pasar Malam. Nature enthusiasts can visit Asia’s largest Bird Park, Butterfly Park, and the scenic hike up Bukit Tabur to get fantastic views of the city. From visiting the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, to discovering the spiritual and colorful Batu caves, there is something on offer for all interests.
