Eligibility

Second and third year Adult Nursing students are eligible to participate on this opportunity. There is a maximum of 20 places available, with a minimum of 15 participants required for this opportunity to take place. Students are recommended to check the eligibility criteria before applying.

 

About

Trip description

This trip to UAE will include visits to both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Students will travel to Abu Dhabi, SEHA Renal center and Sheik Shakabout Medical City. Students have the opportunity to visit a world leading center for renal care and research, with seminars and lectures from clinical experts in renal care, transplant co-ordination, and Hemodialysis. visit will include tour of clinical facilities, desalination plant, renal day care, ITU and acute wards at Sheik Shakabout Medical city.

The group will also visit to Abu Dhabi Shiekh Zayed mosque. Constructed between in 1994, and completed in 2007, the Sheik Zayed Mosque is the largest Mosque in the UAE, capable of accommodating over 40,000 worshippers. Students will gain an appreciation of Islamic architecture, culture, and religious practices, deepening their understanding of the UAE’s societal values and norms.

There will be a seminar at DMU Dubai Campus exploring the prevalence of traditional medicine and folk remedies in lower socio economic groups links to UN SDG’s (SDG 3- Good Health and Well-being, SDG 10- Reduced Inequalities SDG 11- Sustainable Cities and Communities). Students will also discuss Islamic medicine and the socio-cultural contexts of health and well being. Seminars will be followed by an academic led trip to the Spice Souk in Deria, crossing Dubai Creek by Abra. optional group lunch at local Emirati restaurant.

  • Critically evaluate the global burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and associated non-communicable diseases (NCDs), applying this understanding to inform evidence-based assessment, planning, and management of long-term conditions in adult nursing practice in the UK.
  • Explore the incidence of health inequalities in the UAE including the impact of migrant labor, socioeconomic status, and healthcare access, to enhance the nurse’s role in addressing health disparities and advocating for inclusive care.
  • Analyse sustainability initiatives in renal care (e.g., de-carbonisation of hemodialysis) and explore how UK adult nurses can contribute to environmentally responsible practice aligned with the NHS Net Zero agenda.
  • Demonstrate intercultural competence and global awareness by reflecting on international healthcare systems and culturally responsive care models, improving the nurse’s ability to deliver safe, person-centered, and inclusive care in diverse UK populations.
  • Critically reflect on the impact of global educational engagement on personal and professional development, including communication, leadership, and teamwork skills essential to UK adult nursing practice.

Cultural activities

All learning activities, will encompass learning through a cultural lens, but key cultural activities will include a visit to Abu Dhabi Shiekh Zayed mosque. Students will gain an appreciation of Islamic architecture, culture, and religious practices, deepening their understanding of the UAE’s societal values and norms.

In addition, students will learn about traditional Medicine and Folk Remedies in the UAE when they visit Deira Spice Souk.

An optional cultural activity (£60) will be a dune tour. Discover the desert outside of Dubai on a guided red dunes desert safari. The trip includes opportunities to take part in a variety of activities, including dune bashing, optional quad biking, camel riding, and falconry. Desert Safari followed by entertainment at a traditional desert camp, with Barbecue dinner and buffet. The trip offers the opportunity to spend time as a group in a social setting, with peers and trip leads.
