About

Trip description

The purpose of the visit is to expose the first, second- and third-year BA Architecture students to the architecture, history and design culture of Berlin; a city full of history and culture with three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Activities will include visiting a variety of prominent historic, modern and adaptive reuse building typologies and spaces; ranging from museums, galleries to housing and places of worship. These include the Reichstag, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and Jewish Museum, Neus Museum, James-Simon-Galerie and other buildings around the city. We also hope to visit one or two architectural practices.

The estimated total cost for travel and accommodation for this trip to Berlin is £450. Students will be expected to pay £250, as the £200 DMU Global bursary will be deducted from the total.

Learning objectives

This opportunity will allow participants to physically experience buildings that are discussed in lectures (to relate concepts learned in the design studio to a real building); engage with practice and professionals; and give exposure to a new context of Design and Architecture.

Students will undertake research in small groups about the buildings that they will be visiting. Trip leads will also help prepare students with questions to ask the practices that they will be visiting. During the trip, there may be a mini photography/sketch competition. Upon return this could form a mini-exhibition in the architecture studio.

The trip will allow students to meet other students from other years of the BA Architecture programme and will broaden knowledge and understanding of different cultures. It will be exploratory, allowing participants to think critically about the places, but equally fun and social.
