The academic year at DMU is divided into Semester 1 (Autumn/Fall Term) and Semester 2 (Spring Term). Exchange students study through block teaching, focusing on one module at a time over a seven-week period. This allows for more focused learning, small class sizes, and a balanced study experience. Below, you’ll find key term dates, guidance on selecting programmes and modules, and an overview of how block teaching works.

What is Block teaching?
Block teaching allows you to focus on one subject at a time instead of several at once, with more regular assessments and a better study‑life balance.
- Study one module at a time for focused learning.
- Supportive academic environment with small class sizes.
- Each Block lasts 7 weeks – this includes both teaching and assessments for each Block.
Understanding Module, Programme, and Faculty – Glossary
Module (Block):
A module is a single unit of study, which may also be called a course, class, or unit in your home country. At DMU, modules are taught in blocks, which are set periods of teaching within a semester. Each block is usually worth 30 DMU credits (15 ECTS), unless stated otherwise.
Programme:
A programme is the overall course of study you are enrolled in (for example, Business Management or Psychology). In other countries, this may be called a degree, major, or course of study. A programme is made up of several modules (blocks) that are taken over one or more years.
Faculty:
A faculty is an academic grouping within the university that brings together related programmes of study. In some countries, this might be referred to as a school, college, or department. As an exchange student, you will belong to the faculty associated with your programme at DMU. Our faculties are: Faculty of Business and Law (BAL), Faculty of Technology, Arts and Culture (TAC), and Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (HLS).
Programme/Module Selection & Credits
As an exchange student at DMU, you will belong to one of our three faculties, depending on your programme of study.
How to Explore Programmes and Modules
- Select a faculty below to view the programmes and modules available within each area.
- Follow the faculty guidance provided by each faculty in these sections when selecting your modules.
- You may only enrol in modules offered by one faculty. Cross-faculty module options are not available.
- For explanations of key terms such as modules, programmes, and faculties, see the glossary above.
- All modules listed below are subject to change.
- Study options may be limited depending on the exchange agreement. Please contact your exchange or study abroad office to confirm which programmes are available to you.
- Each block is worth 30 DMU credits (equivalent to 15 ECTS) unless stated otherwise.
Faculty of Business and Law
For Business and Law (BAL) courses, students must select blocks from a single programme in either Year 1, Year 2 or Year 3, with the blocks taken depending on the duration of their exchange. The required blocks for each mobility duration are:
- Autumn semester only: Block 1 and Block 2
- Spring semester only: Block 3 and Block 4
- Full year: Blocks 1, 2, 3 and 4
Please note: Requests to mix different programmes or levels within BAL will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

- Business and Marketing
- Business, Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Leicester De Montfort Law School
Faculty of Health and Life Sciences
For Health and Life Sciences (HLS) courses, students must select blocks from one single programme of study and one single year only. Modules cannot be mixed across different years or programmes.
Students should choose blocks according to the guidance for each programme and the duration of their exchange (Full Year, Autumn semester, or Spring semester). The availability for each programme is listed below:
| Programme | Year 2 | Year 3 |
| Biomedical Science | N/A | Full Year only |
| Criminology | Autumn or Full Year | N/A |
| Education Studies | Autumn, Spring or Full Year | Autumn, Spring or Full Year |
| Health and Wellbeing in Society | Autumn or Full Year | Autumn, Spring or Full Year |
| Medical Science | N/A | Autumn, Spring or Full Year |
| Psychology | Autumn, Spring or Full Year | N/A |
Please note: Block 3 modules in Criminology, Education Studies, and Psychology are worth 15 DMU credits. Students studying for the Full Year or Spring semester must therefore select two Block 3 modules in these subject areas.
Some modules have additional requirements, such as enhanced DBS checks. These modules may therefore be unavailable to incoming exchange students. If a restricted module is selected, the student will be contacted with further information.
Faculty of Technology, Arts and Culture
For Technology, Arts and Culture (TAC) courses, students must select blocks from a single programme in either Year 1, Year 2 or Year 3, with the blocks taken depending on the duration of their exchange. The required blocks for each mobility duration are:
- Autumn semester only: Block 1 and Block 2
- Spring semester only: Block 3 and Block 4
- Full year: Blocks 1, 2, 3 and 4
Please note: Requests to mix different programmes or levels within TAC will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.
