About

Trip description

The purpose of this trip to Amsterdam is to form a follow up activity to build on the skills the students develop through their completion of the Lead and Inspire programme.

Lead and Inspire is a strategically delivered skill development programme aimed at enhancing the skills of Black, Asian and ethnically minoritised students at DMU and boosting their future aspirations around becoming a leader. The programme and this trip will seek to develop the DMU Graduate Attributes, and these will inform the activities and session that will take place whilst in Amsterdam. The trip will also have a focus on leadership and leadership skills and activities will take place to enhance these.

Whilst the full details of the trip are not finalised, it is expected that the itinerary will create opportunities for students to meet with local organisations, a partner university (InHolland University of Applied Sciences) and a chance to soak up the cultural offerings of Amsterdam. Potential activities could include:

  • A city scavenger hunt where you will work as a team to solve problems, and demonstrate planning and quick-thinking to navigate the city
  • Peer-to-peer learning activities with local Dutch students at InHolland University of Applied Sciences
  • Organised cultural visits on a variety of topics related to diversity, decolonisation and leadership. This is likely to include a visit and guided tour of the Black Archives a unique historical collection focused on the African diaspora and the Black community in the Netherlands, followed by a workshop on racial identity and activism in Dutch society.
  • A company insight visit (business to be confirmed)

Whilst the cost of the travel and accommodation for students is £100, an additional payment will be requested closer to the trip departure. This is estimated to be an additional £100 and will cover the transfers to St Pancras station from Leicester, an Amsterdam 5-day travel card, as well as one organised cultural visit (likely to be the Anne Frank Huis).

Learning Objectives

Participating in a DMU Global opportunity can help you develop knowledge, skills, and competencies that enhance your employability. The objectives of this trip to Amsterdam are to:

  • Provide opportunities to build on the skills and knowledge acquired on the Lead & Inspire programme
  • Give students the chance to develop their intercultural awareness and communication skills in an international environment
  • Develop a range of Graduate Attributes such as resilience, self-awareness, confidence and critical thinking

Why take part?

This is an exciting opportunity to develop the skills you will learn throughout the Lead and Inspire programme – allowing you to put theory and skills into real life scenarios. You will have the opportunity to develop cultural awareness and have an exploratory experience.

Cultural Activities

While in Amsterdam, students will have the opportunity to visit a wide range of cultural activities in their free time. Recommended visits include Anne Frank Huis (entry is around £14 and tickets are released two-weeks ahead of time). Such a visit will help students explore moral courage, resistance leadership, and the legacy of exclusion.

The group will also have the chance to visit to the Tropenmuseum/Weredlmuseum, with a special focus on its exhibit “Our Colonial Inheritance,” sparking discussion on systemic racism and global power dynamics.

Visa Information

Due to various external factors and an unprecedented demand for international travel, there are significant delays in visa processing, as well as very limited availability of application appointment slots for some countries and embassies.

We recommend that you take all appropriate steps to secure a visa as soon as practically possible, and to notify DMU Global if you face any issues. It is your responsibility to meet the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to. Failing to do so may mean that you’re liable for the costs incurred to the university (including repayment of the DMU Global bursary).
