Learning objectives
This trip provides the opportunity to see how design and culture work together on a larger scale. The activities are designed to give students the flexibility to see and experience things that will be pertinent to their individual Major Design Projects. Therefore, students are encouraged to do their own research prior to departure to find places that will benefit their studies. Upon return, participants will be encouraged to incorporate these experiences into the conclusions of their Major Design Projects.
Cultural activities
Berlin has a vibrant design scene, spanning from historical influences to contemporary innovations. Students will have free time to explore what this city has to offer, including the design and shopping districts of Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, and Friedrichshain.
This city reflects on and takes responsibility for its role in World War II and has created many dignified and poignant memorials for those who were killed in the Holocaust. Students are recommended to visit The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe to experience how public memorials provide a visceral narrative through conceptual design that provokes a strong, immediate emotional response, helping viewers to connect with the historical events on a profound, personal level.
