About
Trip description
Do you want to discover the power in your voice and the true value of your experience, and its value to others? Do you want to transform the way you see yourself and your hard-earned achievements in life? Do you want to embark on adventure overseas in Dubai and work with our careers staff and DMU alumni to develop your ability to speak accurately on yourself with pride and confidence? Do you want to graduate from DMU with real power in your voice?
Here is an opportunity to do just that. Your careers team, led by Andy Morris, manager of Inside Edge Mentoring at DMU, has designed a global trip that comprises a range of sessions and workshops, based at our Dubai campus where you can develop your ability to learn from mentors, who once studied at DMU and now live and work in Dubai. By understanding their career journey and learning about their self-belief and experience, this global trip will empower you to do the same and develop your ability to speak on your own experience, sharing your story as peer mentors, culminating in you developing the skills that you will need in order to stand out in interviews when you graduate.
Join us for a series of interactive sessions, experiential learning workshops, mentoring activity, and cultural visits to key locations in Dubai, and use this trip an opportunity to potentially change to your life.
N.B. Students will be provided with accommodation at the DMU Dubai campus. More information about the facilities can be found here.
Learning objectives
Participating in a DMU Global opportunity can help you develop a range of employability skills and competencies that enhance your studies. Through participation in this trip to Dubai we expect that:
Before the trip to Dubai, staff will deliver a number of preparation sessions to ensure a minimum standard of understanding of mentoring, build a group team culture with the students, explore wants and needs, hope and fears and brief them to ensure they are fully ready for the experience.
Post-trip, we will revisit the trip with students and assess the short-term impact and seek to learn from their experience before considering another trip based on our learning.
Why should you take part?
“The opportunity for a person to change their voice and how they speak is a big deal. For those that came last year, giving them a platform to test themselves in front of their peers and encouraging them to speak up and out was incredibly beneficial. Public speaking continues to be a real concern for almost all students, so by taking time out and away to focus on this with a range of interactive challenges, and in an aspirational setting like Dubai, this can have a dramatic impact on our students voice and self-belief.
There is a clear benefit here for our soon to be graduates, going on to speak openly, clearly and with more confidence when applying for jobs and also when presenting in interviews. By working on self-belief and confidence in new and challenging settings, this will broaden their comfort zones thus making the challenges of finding and securing work easier to navigate. Also, by providing a life-long positive memory, through building a culture of support, story-telling, and valuing individuals, this will have a lasting impact on student’s mental health and ultimately contribute towards better outcomes when leaving DMU.
Given our location at DMU Dubai we have excellent onsite facilities for running a course, and the nature of Dubai being a destination that pushes boundaries, sets new standards and inspires what is possible, it is a perfect location to draw students to attend. Such an environment can inspire a person to challenge their personal best.
The trip and its visits into Dubai will broaden horizons, develop cultural competence and inspire courage in our participants to move outside of their comfort zones.
Immediate feedback from last year’s trip was outstanding with the most cited one-word answer being lifechanging. Not just on the trip itself, but since returning to the trip. We have met with many of the students who have spoken of the impact of the trip on their self-belief and the tools they have developed. They are setting their sights higher, their motivation is stronger, and they are achieving more. We believe we can offer this opportunity to new students once again in Dubai this autumn term.”

Cultural activities
As part of the trip we will have a mentoring session with DMU alumni living in Dubai. This session will help develop cultural awareness from people who know the UAE. Students will again get to visit a range of locations ranging from the more ancient surroundings of the Al Fahidi neighbourhoods and desert safaris, through to the modern face of Dubai with its architecture, and service focused industries.
Dubai is awash with activities for students to sample, whilst also boasting a huge range of nationalities in residents and visitors, perfect for immersing our students in a truly global experience. Allied to this, being situated on campus and living and working around other students from Dubai and around the world, this will further enhance the cultural impact of their experience.
Whilst in Dubai, students will have some free time to explore its many sights and attractions. You will have the chance in your free time to visit Dubai’s Burj Khalifa (£40), the tallest building in the world. In addition, students will get a better chance to learn about the culture and history of Dubai through optional visits to the desert (£50) and the Old Dubai area located on the Dubai creek.
