About
Through DMU’s partnership with Southville International School affiliated with Foreign Universities (SISFU), who deliver DMU management degrees in the Philippines, students have a the opportunity to travel to the city of Manila to to participate in an an exclusive learning opportunity to explore how migrant labour affects the countries and people who are moving around the world. Students will meet with educators in nursing and medicine who are teaching students who aim to move overseas to a range of different healthcare systems. There will be visits to service centres where jobs formerly in the UK have been outsourced, to understand the challenges that serving a global economy involves. There will also be the chance to explore a vibrant international city – and beyond – in one of the largest economies in South East Asia.
This unique opportunity will leave learners with a rare insight into how the global economy shapes lives, often in ways which cannot be observed from the other side of the world.
Learning objectives
Participating in a DMU Global opportunity can help you develop a range of skills and knowledge that enhance your studies. Through participation in this trip to The Philippines students will be able to see the globalization of the labour market from a range of perspectives, those of workers leaving families to earn money overseas and people in places which have services outsourced to them. We will discuss the challenges this poses for everyone involved and how solutions might be found for them. We will also explore how the Philippines is affected by climate change and natural disasters.
Students will participate in a range of research and reflective activities before, during and after the trip to investigate and explore how globalization effects people everywhere. One of these activities will be a discussion before the trip takes place.
Cultural activities
The trip will incorporate visits to Tagaytay to see the Taal volcano, which last erupted in January 2020 and/or to the Palay National Park. As a part of these opportunities we will learn about how the Philippines is affected by crises, builds resilience, but faces challenges in the future. The Philippines is expected to lose the most land of any country due to rising sea levels, with some villages already flooded monthly.
