About
Trip description
First and foremost, the trip will provide an immersive and engaging week of activity in taught sessions, experiential tasks and all in a culture different to one they currently live in. We’re planning to run networking sessions and challenges facilitated by Danish employers, and also have the aim of partnering the group up with Niels Brock College students for a task. These connections they develop in Copenhagen could be lasting and meaningful, offering direct and indirect access to further opportunity as a result of our weeks work.
The trip will have a direct positive impact on graduate outcomes by developing elements of leadership including effective communication, public speaking, strategy, risk taking, initiative, and trust building. We aim to empower students to develop and utilise these attributes over the course of the week. The trip will also improve self-awareness and self-belief and seek to empower students to consider their wants and needs, and how by expanding their world in a global context, can open up opportunity.
Skills that we expect students will develop include active listening, the ability to articulate their thoughts clearly and concisely, apply professional etiquette, presenting their ideas, critical thinking, adapting to other people’s needs and ways of working, setting and meeting goals, gathering resources, thinking on ones feet, taking initiative, applying focus and applying attention to detail to name but a few.
Strengths we will seek to enhance and encourage during the trip, (and help to address weaknesses) include qualities such as adventurousness, assertiveness, resourcefulness, courage, independence and bravery to name but a few.
All of these strengths and skills allied to an immersive experience will help to prepare students for life after DMU going into industry. Employers consistently tell us these are the attributes most desired in the workplace. By improving their leadership skills, and in new and challenging settings it will build resilience and develop self-confidence.
The visit is set for the first week after the academic year ends for undergraduate students, thus offering a positive experience to look forward to, and also a chance to reflect on the year just ending, therefore with the pressure of the year out of the way the student’s mindset will be free to enjoy and explore. We will undertake a range of preparation activities with student before the trip, during the experience and post trip. We will also be recording and filming the experience as part of the evaluation to help capture the workshops and activity in this new cultural setting.
Learning objectives
Participating in a DMU Global opportunity can help you develop a range of employability skills and competencies that enhance your studies. Through participation in this trip to Copenhagen we expect to:
Skill development
This opportunity has been designed to help develop the following DMU Graduate Attributes:

Growth mindset

Communication skills

Confidence

Self-awareness
Cultural activities
There will be free time each day and one full free day within the week for students to enjoy Copenhagen. Activities could include visits to Tivoli Gardens, the Torvehallerne Food Market, the botanical gardens, Orstedspaken park, river cruises, Christiania, bike hire and vintage shopping.
Moreover, In facilitated activities with Danish employers, and team-working challenges alongside their Niels Brock counterparts, students will engage in an organic cultural exchange; of language, of customs, and of professional expectations. We expect this to be of immense value. Exposure to new cultures will help to develop the growth mindset of diversity by disrupting them and locating them in a new culture different to their own and one they likely have not experienced before. Exposure to new settings, new ideas, new attitudes and new challenges will provide an experience that will challenge them in ways their course likely has not.
