About
Trip description
The purpose of the trip is to provide students dedicated time and space to explore the art of networking. We will do this in guided workshops in Copenhagen, using experiential activity from which students can experience a different culture and then implement when they return home.
By teaching theory, tools, approaches and techniques, in a new cultural setting, this helps foster new attitudes and abilities. This will push students into new settings and cultures where they can learn to lean on their skills and strengths in order to complete the tasks related to networking.
The trip will have a direct positive impact on graduate outcomes by fostering networking skills, to help students improve self-presentation, grow their number of professional connections and develop the skills to use networking to their tactical advantage. The experience will also improve self-belief and empower participants to consider their wants and needs and how by expanding their world in a global context can open up opportunity.
Great examples of skills students will develop include active listening, ability to articulate their thoughts clearly and concisely, apply professional etiquette, setting and meeting goals, using questioning, extracting information, thinking on ones feet and taking initiative. Strengths we will focus on include curiosity, adventurousness, assertiveness, resourcefulness, independence and bravery.
All of these strengths and skills, allied to an immersive experience, will help to prepare students for life after DMU. By improving their ability to develop new relationships and in new and challenging settings it will build resilience and develop self-confidence.
Why take part?
Overseas travel broadens the mind and horizons. It can change a person dramatically, in powerful ways and for the better. Being part of an experience even for just part of a week can have a massive impact on a students world view and how they see themselves. This experience not only provides students with a chance to experience a different culture, but also to test themselves by going on a new adventure.
Networking is a critical tool of any professional seeking to engage with new people. It’s also a tool that so many people misunderstand and are fearful of. Taking quality time to explore networking and how it can help develop a person’s life chances and experiences is time well spent. This is for any student who is concerned about networking and/or lacking the know how and skills to make it work for them. This experience in Copenhagen allows a student to live and work alongside likeminded students who also want to be better at networking, and all under the guidance and support of outstanding DMU staff who both are seasoned networkers and keen to bring out the best in students.
Learning Objectives
Participating in a DMU Global opportunity can help you develop knowledge, skills, and competencies that enhance your employability. The objectives of this trip to Copenhagen are to:
Students will be offered mentoring sessions to help them develop confidence when meeting with professionals. This will be via Inside Edge Mentoring. All students will be encouraged to feedback in evaluations and also join Inside Edge Mentoring to use the existing mentor network further. The trip leads will be available for 1-2-1s after and will support their LinkedIn profile development.
Cultural Activities
The experience of being in a society that values equality and is famed for being egalitarian, may be in sharp contrast to attitudes and values that many of our students have experienced in life. This can help disrupt norms and assumptions that students make about the world. Exposure to new attitudes, new types of food, standards of living and working practices will help trigger conversations with students and develop them as global citizens.
This will develop the growth mindset with exposure to new settings, new ideas, new attitudes and new challenges will provide an experience that will challenge them in ways their course likely has not.
There will be free time each day and one full free day within the week for students to enjoy Copenhagen. Activities could include visits to Tivoli Gardens, the Torvehallerne Food Market, the botanical gardens, Orstedspaken park, river cruises, bike hire and vintage shopping.
