How to pay
Payment details: Students will be required to pay £350 as a contribution towards the cost of travel after being offered a place on the trip. The DMU Global bursary will be deducted directly from the overall cost of the booking.
Carbon Levy
Student contribution: To offset the carbon emissions from the flight for this trip there is a £5 Carbon Levy for this trip which has been added to the total cost. Information about how this Levy will be used can be found here.

Eligibility
All DMU students under the age of 30 (due to external funding rules) who have completed at least 20 hours of Mandarin study and have passed the HSK 2 test prior to departure are welcome to apply for this opportunity, with priority given to those students studying Mandarin with the DMU Confucius Institute. There is a maximum of 20 places available, with a minimum of 10 participants required for this opportunity to take place. Students are recommended to check the eligibility criteria before applying.
Please note, if you have already participated on the “Chinese Bridge” Summer and Winter Camp in the past 3 years you would not be eligible to participate.

Trip description
You could be heading off to Beijing this summer with DMU’s Confucius Institute (CI) to experience language and life in China, helping you to develop skills which global employers are looking for, including cultural awareness.
This exciting DMU Global opportunity will take 20 students to the University of Science and Technology
Beijing (USTB) for a two-week summer school, including Mandarin classes and cultural trips to
sights such as the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven.
Students will also take language and culture courses run by USTB which will provide a comparative insight into the Chinese culture. This is a great opportunity to enhance your CV while exploring a fascinating part of the world.
USTB was founded in 1952 and is one of China’s most prestigious universities, valuing international exchange and supporting more than 4,200 students from 125 countries. The summer school therefore provides the opportunity to gain a valuable insight into Chinese culture, while at the same time attending a top university where you will be able to meet people from all over the world.

Cultural activities
Students will have some free time to explore Beijing independently. Located in northern China, the capital city has one of the largest populations in the world, with a bustling atmosphere and rapid rate of development. Hidden in its hutongs, narrow alleys typical of this part of China, as well as in its public gardens and temples, lies a fascinating history for you to discover. From the Great Wall of China to the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and local teahouses, there is plenty for you to experience in this magical city.
