Yokohama City University (YCU) is a public university in Yokohama, Japan with approximately 5,000 students. YCU has been ranked 16th amongst the “worlds best small universities” (Times Higher Education, 2017) and is ranked 30th among universities in Japan (Times Higher Education Japan University Rankings 2019).
Founded in 1882, the university is located 18 minutes outside the vibrant and welcoming port city of Yokohama, and less than an hour away from Tokyo via public transport.

Programmes of study
YCU offers a range of programmes taught in English including Accounting & Finance, Business, Economics, History, Politics, International Relations, English Literature and Psychology. Furthermore, incoming exchange students are encouraged to study Japanese language, which is offered from beginner – to advanced level.

Exchange students are welcomed to YCU with an orientation week, introducing new students to life in Japan and providing information of campus life and study. Additionally, new international student are paired with a peer tutor to provide guidance and assistance during their exchange in Japan.
The university prides itself not only on academics, but also on extra-curricular wellbeing and development. Facilities include three athletics fields, tennis courts, a gymnasium with indoor running tracks, a martial arts hall, music studios, a swimming pool, student conference rooms, and much more. With more than 150 sports clubs and societies, exchange students are encouraged to join these activities to enrich their student experience in Japan.
There are opportunities to explore Yokohama, as well as travelling further afield in Japan. Local attractions in Yokohama include the Yokohama Museum of Art, Cosmo World (amusement park), Sankeien Garden, Kanteibyo shrine, Nissan Stadium (Rugby World Cup 2019 venue), and much more!
