Who can apply and when?

Our summer opportunities are open to most DMU Leicester students. Some students may also qualify for additional funding for these opportunities, see below for more details.

  • Applications open at 9am on Monday 11 January 2027
  • Applications close at 9am on Monday 1 February 2027

Note: if you’ve already taken part in an extra-curricular opportunity in the 2026-27 academic (e.g. Cultural Horizons or Careers trips), you will not be able to take part in these opportunities.

How are our summer opportunities different to DMU Global trips?

Unlike a one-week overseas trip that DMU Global typically offers, our 2-6 week summer opportunities can be a more immersive and rewarding experience that require greater commitment, adaptability and independence. If you choose to participate on these summer programmes you should be prepared to challenge yourself academically, culturally and personally during your time abroad. Here are a some of the ways these opportunities are different:

  • Duration – summer opportunities typically last 2-6 weeks, rather than just a few days. This means you need to be prepared for a longer period away from home, family and friends.
  • Independence – you will be travelling independently without DMU staff and will need to manage the practicalities of daily life independently. Some days on these programmes may be less structured and have less supervision.
  • Funding – our summer opportunities often have different funding available compared to DMU Global trips as we receive extra funding from the Turing Scheme. Students may also qualify for the additional funding if they meet at least one of these ‘Widening Participation‘ criteria.
  • Expectations – these experiences can often be more academically, professionally and personally demanding. You may be expected to attend classes, undertake projects, complete assessments, and more generally participate fully in intensive days of activities.
  • Immersion – spending longer overseas will provide you with a deeper cultural experience. You will experience daily life in your host country and will need to adapt to new routines, food and the language.
  • Mixing with new people – on these programmes you will meet students from other universities, countries, cultures and backgrounds. This will be an opportunity to build friendships, experience different worldviews and step outside of your comfort zone.
