Eligibility

All DMU students are eligible to participate in this opportunity, but it would be of particular relevance for students interested in or currently studying the German language. DMU students who will be going to study on exchange in Germany in 2024-25 are also encouraged to apply. There are a maximum of 10 places available. Students are recommended to check the eligibility criteria before applying.

 

Students are recommended to apply for no more than 2 overseas opportunities. Further application submissions will not be considered.

About

Osnabrück University is offering students the chance to take part in the German Language and Culture Summer School 2024. Students will participate in a 3 week programme focused on learning about the German language, history and culture between 6 July and 26 July 2024.

This Summer School offers participants with no prior knowledge or basic knowledge (A1.1 and A1.2) of the German language the opportunity to acquire the foundations of German and to experience more than 1000 years of German culture and civilization in and around the city of Osnabrück, the City of Peace. By the end of the program, students will have mastered basic language skills in German equivalent to level A1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The programme is a cooperation between the Language Center (Sprachenzentrum) and the International Office at Osnabrück University.


What’s on offer?

  • A total of 50 hours of classroom instruction
  • An interactive lesson design and small group learning
  • Hands-on language practice during leisure activities with student partners from Osnabrück University,
  • The opportunity for further self-study at the University’s Self-Access Centre (CLS),
  • A rich cultural and recreational program plus an optional 3-day trip to Berlin,
  • Certification recognising proficiency level A1.1 of the CEFRL upon successful completion of the language course.

Programme information

Practical information

Students that participate on this summer school will have accommodation arranged by Osnabrück University’s International Office. You will stay in a single room in either a dormitory or a carefully selected homestay.

The programme fee (€1150/ £960) includes: all tuition, accommodation, cultural activities & excursions, bus pass, welcome package, pick-up from the station and 24/7 assistance for participants. In addition to the programme costs, students will be required to pay for and arrange travel to Osnabrück (approx. £200). This includes a return flight to Amsterdam or Dusseldorf and an onward train (2-3 hours) to the University.

DMU Global Funding

Students that successfully apply for this opportunity will qualify for a special DMU Summer School Global bursary of £500.

Payment for the summer school will need to be made by students directly to Osnabrück University via their online payment and application system. The application deadline is 11 April 2025, but further guidance will be given to accepted DMU students.

Cultural activities

As part of the programme organised by Osnabrück University there will be a range of cultural activities offered including:

  • Welcome and farewell dinners as well as other social outings
  • A guided tour of Osnabrück’s medieval history by a night watchman
  • A visit to the city of Bremen to explore it’s maritime flair
  • OPTIONAL – gain first-hand experience about the nation’s history and current politics during an optional three day excursion to Berlin (travel, public transportation, accommodation & breakfast, cultural program all included in the additional fee of EUR 300).

Visa Information

Due to various external factors and an unprecedented demand for international travel, there are significant delays in visa processing, as well as very limited availability of application appointment slots for some countries and embassies.

We recommend that you take all appropriate steps to secure a visa as soon as practically possible, and to notify DMU Global if you face any issues. It is your responsibility to meet the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to. Failing to do so may mean that you’re liable for the costs incurred to the university (including repayment of the DMU Global bursary).
