Eligibility

These opportunities have been designed for DMU Leicester undergraduate students. We are looking for enthusiastic, engaged individuals who are keen to broaden their global perspectives and gain international experience. The programme particularly suits those with an interest in other cultures, ambitions to work or study overseas, and a strong academic record who can act as ambassadors for DMU.

We also value students who are actively involved in university life through societies, clubs, careers initiatives, or previous DMU Global opportunities. In line with our commitment to widening participation, we strongly encourage applications from students with limited overseas experience who are motivated to explore new cultures and broaden their horizons.

What makes these trips unique?

Delivered by DMU Global, these overseas opportunities give you the chance to visit key global hubs. This series of trips is unique in the following ways:

  • Designed for you – our team of experts have experience of travelling the world and have chosen the most fun, culturally-enriching destinations and activities for you to have the trip of a lifetime.
  • Mix with other students – these interdisciplinary trips will give you the chance to engage with new students from across DMU, helping you to meet likeminded people and make friends for life.
  • Fixed prices – All long-haul trips outside of Europe cost £500, and short-haul trips to Europe cost £200. With extra funding provided by DMU Global these budget-friendly experiences allow you travel globally at a reduced price.
  • Accessibility & ease – we book the airport transfers, flights and accommodation as well as arranging a fully-packed itinerary to help you make the most of your time abroad.
  • Wraparound activities – before, during and after the trip you will also benefit from intercultural workshops and carbon literacy training to help you achieve your goals and learn as much as possible!

What will you gain from these experiences?

These intentionally designed experiences will help you develop a mix of skills, values and knowledge that are required to be successful in global contexts. Here is a detailed summary of what the trips will help you learn:

  • Curiosity, open‑mindedness, and cultural self‑awareness – an active interest in other cultures alongside an awareness of one’s own cultural assumptions, values, and perspectives.
  • Ability to navigate unfamiliar environments and cultural contexts – confidence and adaptability when engaging with new places, customs, and social norms.
  • Intercultural communication and cultural understanding – the ability to act and communicate effectively across cultures, informed by analysing, interpreting, and understanding of a different culture’s values, norms, and behaviours.
  • Cross-cultural empathy and respect for other cultures – being able to understand cultures by putting yourself in the shoes of another person and adopting a position of ethnorelativism in the believe that no culture is superior to another.
  • Collaboration within multicultural social and professional environments – experience cooperating with people from diverse cultural backgrounds in both social and professional settings.
  • Global awareness and contextual understanding – a deeper understanding of global issues, historical influences, and how they shape contemporary societies.
