How to pay
Payment details: Students will be required to pay the £50 application fee and the relevant programme fee directly to Sophia University after being offered a place on the opportunity. The DMU Global bursary & Turing funding will be paid directly to students.

Eligibility
All DMU students are eligible to participate in this opportunity, but it would be of particular relevance for students currently studying the Japanese language with DMU Global or independently. DMU students who are planning to study on exchange in Japan in 2056-26 are also encouraged to apply. There are a maximum of 8 places available. Students are recommended to check the eligibility criteria before applying.
Students are recommended to apply for no more than 2 overseas opportunities. Further application submissions will not be considered.
About
DMU in cooperation with its partner, Sophia University are able to offer students the chance to participate in Summer Sessions in Tokyo, Japan for students interested in Japan and East Asia. Students can choose to participate in one of the below programmes taught between Wednesday 01 July – Wednesday 22 July 2026. These programs provide a unique chance to explore Japanese language, culture, and society while experiencing Tokyo’s dynamic urban life.
Summer Session in East Asian Studies
Students will gain knowledge on the various aspects of East Asian culture and contemporary social issues, as well as reflect on Japan’s role as a member of East Asian region in the world. Students are required to choose a minimum of 2 courses for the summer session, more information about the available courses can be found here.
Summer Session in Japanese Language
Participate in a 3-week intensive Japanese program designed for beginners through to advanced learners. Classes are tailored to each proficiency level, with added opportunities to practice language skills and experience Japanese culture through events and activities outside the classroom. Throughout the sessions, students will be invited to several cultural events. Information on the event schedule will be provided in the welcome pack, which will be shared with the students before beginning of the session. Previous cultural activities have included:

Application information
Please note that once you have applied by the deadline (9am on Monday 2 February) DMU Global will contact you to confirm whether you have been successfully shortlisted. If shortlisted, you will then be required to submit an online application directly to Sophia University by March 06. Successful applicants will also be invited to an information session in early February, where the steps involved in the application process will be explained.
Practical information
Students are required to arrange an accommodation independently. Students are required to contact the housing directly to make a reservation. Ensure to mention that you are a Sophia short-term program participant when making a reservation, in order to receive the accommodation fee discount. You may also self-arrange accommodation. Please review the Housing Information List provided by Sophia University.
